HOW TO NUMBER YOUR COMMENTS

UPDATE - MAY 2015

Yes! There is a way to number your comments (and replies) again! Go here to this post by HELPLOGGER, which is a really simple and easy-to-apply tweak that will sort you out.

A word of warning though - if you still have my old tutorial installed on your blog, make sure you remove that one first (the easiest way is to change your template).

Hurrah for numbering our comments again!

Note added 20 January 2012

Heart-breaking news - this numbered comments tutorial I sweated blood and tears over NO LONGER WORKS. Blogger has now introduced nested comments (in other words, you can click Reply to reply to any particular comment) so the numbering system is logically unable to work as the numbering cannot be applied. The coding is unalbe to allow for a comment - then the reply to a comment - and possibly some more replies to that... so alhtough the coding may still be there in your blog html, but it won't work any more.

I don't see any point in going to the aggravation of trying to remove it as it doesn't DO anything and certainly isn't hurting anything (if it ain't broke... etc...) so my best advice is just to ignore it. Sob.

If I or anyone else can figure out how to get around this with a new tweak, you can be sure I'll post it!

Sometimes you wish those comments left under your blog posts were automatically numbered - especially if you are hosting a giveaway, and use the Random Number Generator to pick a winner. I know I've gone dizzy counting (and checking, and double-checking).

So I was determined to add a counter to my comments, and Googled several tutorials. Needless to say, no one tutorial worked for me, but after having spent a happy (!) 4 or so hours trying to get it to work, I have finally managed it.

I used three different tutorials to get the result I wanted, ie: I didn't want to delete the avatars altogether as suggested on one tutorial, and I didn't want to have the avatar pix changed to that boring "B" either. Plus - I wanted the numbers on the right, and not next to the pictures. And I found some of my blog code was different - which cause me a big panic! However, there were instructions on another blog which did work.... (I also found that you need to have the comments listed under the blog, and not on a separate page or drop-down menu).

Before you start, you need to have your Comments showing on the same page and under your post. So you need to go into Settings > Comments and adjust this as your first step, then save Settings:

Here's how I did it.
  • Go to Layout > Edit HTML and DOWNLOAD A COPY OF YOUR BLOG to your desktop. It only takes a second, and you can happily mess around with your html in the secure knowledge that if it all goes wrong, or you hate it, you can reload your blog without any dire consequences. (I reloaded mine around 5 times in this session as I couldn't get the numbered comments to show).

  • Click on Expand Widget Templates, then click CTRL + F on your keyboard to bring up the FIND box.
  • Type this into the box:
<dl id='comments-block'>

Click on the Next arrow (next to the Find box) and the code will highlight in green.

Add this code immediately BELOW it:
<script type='text/javascript'>var CommentsCounter=0;</script>

If the box goes pink, it's because the code can't be found. This happened with my blog. Don't panic.
Try this code instead:
<b:loop values='data:post.comments' var='comment'>

Add the following code just ABOVE this line:
<script type='text/javascript'>var CommentsCounter=0;</script>
The postition so far: I have found the code I needed, and inserted the necessary line of code above it.

  • Next step: delete the code in the Find box, and replace it with this code
    <data:commentpostedbymsg/>
    • This will highlight the next section you need.

    • Now copy and paste this bit of code
      <span class='numberingcomments' style='float:right;font-size:20px;'><a expr:href='data:comment.url' title='Comment Link'><script type='text/javascript'>CommentsCounter=CommentsCounter+1;document.write(CommentsCounter)</script></a></span>
And Save it. Normally I'd say Preview - but you can't preview the comments until you click on them!

      ADDED 8 MARCH 2010
A couple of people have said their comments aren't working, so try putting the code here instead (ie: above the
      </dt&gt

      TROUBLESHOOTING

Coments will show under the relevant post.
      • If you can't see your numbered comments, try clicking on the TITLE OF THE POST. You should then see all your comments numbered in order, below your post. Once you have your comments all set up and working, THEN you can alter your comments to appear as a full page or pop-up window.
      • Did you remember to adjust your Settings, so the comments will appear below the post? It won't work if the comments are a separate page.
      • If they still don't show, check your coding again. Upload your blog (you saved the full template to your desktop, didn't you?) and have another try.
These are the three sites that I cobbled my instructions together from (thanks so much, guys):
      Tech TNT
      Katy Did & Kid
      The Mom Nerd

      ADDITION: 10 Feb 2010
Crystal sent in a comment, and said neither code mentioned worked for her (Crystal is using the Rounders template, so this may be why) - but that searching for "comments-block" did! And that it was the 2nd comments-block section that gave her the numbered comments (see Comment No 37, attached to this post).

So if you are still having trouble, I suggest you give Crystal's suggestion a try. Anything that does the job has got my vote!

      Thanks Crystal!

      ADDITION:  16 Feb 2010

I forgot to mention - the counter counts up in blocks of 200. In other words, it will count from 1-200 and then resets to start again, with the next block of 200 also counting from 1-200. And the next, and so on.

I think Blogger didn't anticipate that anyone COULD get more than 200 comments to any one post! (if you check out any other tutorials, you'll find they say the same).

Still, it's a whole heap better than counting by hand. And if anyone knows how to reset it to an unlimited number, I hope you'll let me know.

      LATEST UPDATE:  24 Feb 2010

I have received TWO great comments - thanks so much, ladies.

HoboMama (Comment #46) has suggested how to solve getting all #1s. I know Miss Priss was having this problem.
"For some reason the code got out of order (I swear I didn't enter it wrong, so maybe it rearranged itself — stupid code). Make sure the first code snippet is directly under the dl thing; mine had moved below the next line. I also got it to work with Pop-Up comments selected. They still show under each post, just not in the pop-up box."
Note from me: Code DOES rearrange itself - why, I don't know. So if something doesn't work it's worth rechecking, right from the beginning. I have to redo mine - you may have noticed my comments are numbering on the left (by the name) and also on the right of each comment. This has happened since Blogger altered the main code by adding the Extra Page facility. Another on my Things To Do list!

Cheryl F (Comment #47) has solved the "200 comments, then start numbering again for the next block of 200" problem by sending this great link from danguyf:

      Update 9th March 2010

K (Comment #53) says that she had to tweak a little herself as she didn't have one of the code links I mentioned,  so here's another helpful solution if you are having problems:
"I put it  [the code] within the div class comment-timestamp instead and tweaked the style a bit to fit into my comment box."

      Update 16th March 2010

      Tiaras (Comment #59) says:
I have been trying to get this to work for months - to no avail. I do not have the code: data:commentpostedbymsg and could never get this to work. By reading through the comments here - I took a few suggestions and yipee!! it works now!!

I emailed her for more info and she said:

I couldn't locate the second line of code in my blogger html code.

So I took the clue and searched for this line in my html. There were three and I simply added the code  after the third which was a couple of lines down from the first code input.
What I say is: if one suggestion doesn't work for you, read through all the comments etc, and try something else. It took me 4 days and many tutorials to settle on a combination of the three that worked for me. So don't despair!

      NEW NOTE 28 September 2011

Just a reminder... if you change your template (ie: if you try one of the new Designer Templates) this coding will still work - but you'll have to put the code in again. So if you are experimenting with your look and change the template again - just be aware you'll have to enter this code again every time. Also any other html coding like your signature, and any other tweaks.

Any more ideas, don't hesitate to send!

      1. The numbers come up but still the comment section is on a different page. I DID reset it the way you tiold but it just doesn't happen duh. But at least the comments are now numbered, lol.

      2. I noticed this on someone else's blog as well. I wouldn't worry - I think it's just one of those things that surpasseth Man's understanding, etc. I have left a comment on a blog that did that, but the comments show under the post, numbered, which is fine. And mine doesn't seem to do that... very strange. Blogger really does have a mind of its own. I am STILL trying to work out the foolproof way to get the pix to stay where I put them in relation to text. Aargh.

      6. What a fantastic tutorial! I've done this once before, and wanted to add it to my second blog also, so I googled it again and found this super-easy tutorial. Very easy to understand and had it done in about 5 minutes. Thank you for posting it!

      7. Great tutorial! None of the others I looked at matched my template coding so thank you for adding in the bit about the search bar going pink because that's what mine did and I was in despair that I'd have to count up to 176 myself! Made sorting out the winner in my giveaway a breeze :) Thanks again!

      8. Thanks for the info! I can't wait to try it! One thing that's stopping me is how small your tutorial pics are. I can't see what I'm suppose to do. I'm over 40 so it is what it is. LOL

You'd totally be my hero if you enlarged them abit.

Just thought I'd mention this in case others may have the same issue.

      14. Parent Club:
I've emailed you privately about this.

First thing to check - are your comments set to show under the post (Step 1 above), which means Option 3: Embedded below post. This is the usual hiccup.

Check all the code is placed exactly where I say, and that you haven't duplicated any html like } symbols. It's worth re-entering everthing again so any bloopers are written over.

If you saved a copy of your blog, you can upload it and start again from scratch, no harm done. If you didn't, try the above to fix it and contact me if you are still in a mess.

      23. So glad it's been useful for you!

        Miss Priss - I'd suggest you reload your original template (which you DID save, didn't you?) and start over again. And even if you didn't - do the entire process again, overwriting the old code (much easier than trying to spot any errors). You may have got one piece of code entered twice, or you may have left a space somewhere, or not closed your comments with an > or a }

With code, the simplest error makes strange things happen. Hope this helps!

It came up twice. The 1st one didn't work, but I reloaded & got it with the 2nd! Thanks!! This will help a lot! : )

Thanks for the tutorial, even though it didn't work for me.

      34. Question...

I am trying to do this for a friend's blog, but she is missing the "data:commentpostedbymsg" so I can't finish putting in the rest of the code. Any suggestions on a variation of that particular line?

        ReplyDelete
      37. BETH - the counter won't count higher than 200. It then resets to 1 and counts the next block of 200, and so on. Unfortunately, this is how it works (but it still beats counting by hand).

      41. Oh, thank goodness! I've got this to work on Hobo Mama Reviews now.

        Few things:

I tried Crystal's way and using the second comment block worked for me.

Miss Priss: I also was getting all #1s. For some reason the code got out of order (I swear I didn't enter it wrong, so maybe it rearranged itself — stupid code). Make sure the first code snippet is directly under the dl thing; mine had moved below the next line. Anyway!

I also got it to work with Pop-Up comments selected. They still show under each post, just not in the pop-up box.

Thank you so much! I was tired of figuring out alternate ways of counting giveaway comments.

        ReplyDelete
      42. You have my THANKS too! I tried alot of tuts that didn't work also. Started all over with the original XML, and now I have numbered comments using your simple instructions. I'll have to work on styling though -- float:right is not pretty and looks jagged.

This may solve the 200 comments pagination problem : http://danguyf.livejournal.com/185965.html .

      58. Mama Llama - that's because I just put in the new Pages thingie, so I need to redo the instructions myself. When Blogger changes code overall, it can also affect hacks. I've just been too lazy!

To put the numbers on the left is easy - see the big orange block outlined in the last picture? You'll see where it says span class=numbering comments and next to that float:right - just chang the instruction to float:left. And right next to it, you can also adjust the font size.

        Again... Thank you :)

      76. I found out about this tutorial through a comment on another blog and it is a lifesaver. My comments are now numbered. Thanks so much for posting the info on how to do it.

        ReplyDelete
      77. The code works for me, but my comments are numbered twice. For example, it says "2 1" on the first comment and "4 3" on the second comment.

Do you know what to do to fix that?

        ReplyDelete
      78. Joceylyn: Thanks for leaving a comment - I'm sorry you are having trouble with the numbered comments. It works 99.9% of the time, first time.

Are you sure you have followed the instructions carefully?

In the very first section you'll have EITHER this piece of code: dl id='comments-block'
OR the other code (if you don't have the first piece in your blog):
        b:loop values='data:post.comments' var='comment'

Perhaps you have added the additional code for both in your blog?

Also, if you read the comments others have made - one of these may work better for you, or the original tutorials I combined to make my own instructions.

Also, putting the final piece of code after /dt> instead of above it, may also work better for you. Hope this helps!

        ReplyDelete
      79. THANK YOU SO MUCH..been struggling to number my comments prior to an upcoming giveaway..your instructions were the first that worked...THANK YOU!

        ReplyDelete
      80. Thank you so much! This was so much easier when you explained it. It worked the first time and within minutes!

      81. All right, I actually do need the over-200 comments fix now (yea!), but I can't get the danguyf thing to work. It just removes the numbers completely again. If anyone knows a place with an alternate solution to numbering from 201 up, let me know! :)

        ReplyDelete
      82. Lauren - if you'll read my comments at the bottom of my post, you'll notice that I wrote the comments only go up in increments of 200. So when you reach 200, the comments will start again from number 1, and so on.

Just count your blocks of 200, ie: 3rd block of comments, comment number 26 will actually be your 626th comment!

        Hope this helps.

As far as I know, to date nobody has worked out how to get around this. I don't think anyone anticipated more than 200 comments to any one post! If there is a fix out there, perhaps someone will let me know - and I'll update this tutorial.

        ReplyDelete
      83. You go girl! I tried several other "Number your comments" tutorials, none of which I could get to work for my blog. That's an embarrassment, because I'm a blog designer! However, your tutorial worked perfectly. Thank you so much!

        ReplyDelete
      84. Jessica - In that case, I'm doubly glad I was able to be of help!

Blogger doing all this new stuff is the culprit - bits of code that used to be there no longer are... so you've nowhere to hang your links etc. It took me the better part of 4 days to get this to work how I wanted, cobbling together 3 different tutorials that had the features I wanted to show.

        ReplyDelete
      149. Thanks for this! I got it to work "kind of"

I just tried it and the comments did number. However, when you click on comments they wont open, so you can't leave a comment. I looked for the </dt> but it wasn't in my code.

However when I chose to disply my comments on a full page or pop up, then you could leave a comment. However, of course, the numbers disappeared. LOL!

The good new is that when I want to process my giveaways, now all I have to do is change my comments back temporary to embedded to see the numbered comments.

If you have any other ideas for how I could get comments while emedded that would be great. Otherwise I'll just do it the way I said above. It's still an improvement.

        ReplyDelete
      150. Thank you thank you thank you!!!
I got it to work on my blog using Crystal's suggestion with the "comment block" search. I have a really tweeked blogger template, so didn't have some of the code you mentioned.
I also used the link to the over 200 comment at danguyf, so hopefully if I ever need it, that will work too.

      153. KATHLEE - thanks so much for leaving such lovely comments.

For future reference - if you can't find the code:

        1. Go into html view and type in CTRL + F to bring up the 'find' box just above your bottom toolbar.
        2. Copy&paste the snippet of code in to the box. If it turns pink (meaning the computer can't find it...) it's worth also clicking on 'Expand Widget Templates' then click the arrow next to the 'find box' (bottom toolbar) again, and see if that will bring it up.

I've given two snippets of code to look for (right at the beginning of the tutorial - if one doesn't work, the other should) so try both in that 'find' box. With this coding you generally don't need to expand the widget template... but it all depends on the template you have installed. The new Designer Templates seem to need it, for some reason.

        Hope this helps!

      155. Hi Susie,

I just switched my blogger layout to the new version and my old comment-numbering disappeared. So I tried to get my comments numbered again, using this tutorial, and it didn't work. I found all the codes, and pasted in all the codes I was supposed to, and checked, and the comments are still un-numbered. Odd. I numbered the comments in my old blogger template without any problem, using Katydid's tutorial. Tried Katydid's tutorial this time, and yours too, and no luck. Could you help, please? Whenever you have some time to shoot me an email, I'd sure appreciate it. Thank you.

      187. Thanks a bunch! The "if this doesn't work, try this ones" worked for me. Blogger has a good habit of changing things around a lot so those who are having trouble try copy and pasting the obvious coding (i.e. commentpostedbyms) and you should be able to find it.

      188. Susie, great tutorial Mine is half working. For some reason the numbers won't show on anyone that has left a comment that has a Blogger id. Any ideas?

      189. Sorry Susie, there should have been an exclamation mark after "great tutorial"! I didn't want you to think I was being sarcastic ;)
