PC MAINTENANCE - EVERY MONTH (Windows XP)

Does your computer go like a rocket - or do you suffer from really sluggish startups, hiccups, The Dreaded Blue Screen, re-boots for no reason?

You probably need to reoptimise your sytem. Even with regular Disk Cleanup and Defragmentation, your system can get clogged with bad sectors, slow startups etc.
Keeping your system optimised is something you should plan to do once a month.

I have Windows XP, and this should work the same for Vista and also earlier models. If you have any problems getting this to work, email me.

HOW TO OPTIMISE YOUR SYSTEM:
Do the Disk Clean and Defragmentation as described in the PC Maintenance Every Week post, then once you have finished:

  1. Click on your Start button
  2. Click on My Computer
  3. Right-click on C Drive
  4. Click on Properties
  1. Click on the Tools folder
  2. You'll see a section called Error Checking
  3. Click the button that says Check Now
You will now see a box with two options:
    • Auto fix file system errors
    • Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors
Check both boxes and click Start

You will be asked to restart your system, which lets the programme run. Click to restart, then sit back and let it do its thing.

Please be aware that this will take around 4 hours, and at the end of the programme it will restart automatically: you don't need to do a thing!

Once you've finished, it'll feel like a new computer!
